Why Startups Fail

Monday, October 23rd, 2006 at 11:22 am

Why do startups fail? And how can we make them succeed? I’m on a journey to find out. Whether we fail or become the next YouTube, we all have to learn. And who better to learn it from than Paul Graham? Not only a programmer and designer of programming languages, he is also an essayist. Read more from the person who got more than 8 million hits on his very simple and plain autobiographical website (www.paulgraham.com).

Study no more, Prison’s better

Saturday, October 21st, 2006 at 10:18 am

Prison Break. It’s a show so different from the ones like Lost, Desperate Housewives and Smallville etc. An intellectual film that brings you into its chaotic knots of schemes and strategies; how does one actually break out of a maximum security prison?

Tell me if you want the show. It comes included with Cs.

Caged Football

Sunday, October 15th, 2006 at 11:59 pm

This is The Cage, they call it Singapore’s first indoor soccer stadium. I took this picture while waiting for my team’s chance in the fast-paced and tiring arena. Yeah, incredulously tiring, you think it looked small? It is, and that’s why it took that much strength from me. Playing with a bunch of energetic SIS year 1s and 2s sprinting endlessly with or without the ball, I couldn’t keep up. Still, it was one of the best soccer I’ve played in a while.

Imagine the music that continously blast from the speakers surrounding the court, playing the familiar tunes that often accompany NIKE and Adidas football commercials. It’s easily described in a word, inspiring. www.thecage.com.sg

The Future of this World

Friday, October 13th, 2006 at 9:37 pm

I love my O2 Mini. With it, I can store appointments and meetings that I’ll normally forget. I can sync contacts & adresses with my computer and read saved mails. I can be reminded of my friends’ birthdays, not that it matters that much; the email reminders very often comes much earlier. Because of my O2, I have become just that little bit more organized. But now, I’m on the lookout for a new phone, especially one with WiFi capabilities. Why the need for wireless internet? The answer is clear; FREE WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS!

And it’s not just free, it’s available readily almost all over Singapore. As a student pursuing the art of technologies, I have made several predictions during my polytechnic days. One of them has just came true so if you would join me, let us reminisce some of those predictions and test out my ‘Nostradamus’ talents.

A dilemma, updated

Exchange 61%
Tour 39%

This is the results of the poll held here one week ago. As we have it, most people prefer an exchange. Why is that so, I cannot predict. In my own opinion, I think an exchange will allow, pardon my language, a ‘deeper penetration’ of the community’s cultures and lifestyle. To spend more than 3 months in a region where you can’t speak the language you are accustomed to, can’t eat the food you always eat, can’t do the things you normally do in your leisure time; one is practically being forced to change his / her lifestyle.

For me, I would really like to experience that change. Having spent a wonderful week in Paris, I realised I indeed cannot live without my dose of asian food. Imagine! We actually paid SGD $60 for 3 plates of economical rice! I wonder what would happen if I were to stay there for a few more months. Contrary, I’ll probably make Stella cook our favorite Singaporean dishes at least once every week ;)

One of my friends is going on a work & travel program; I think that’s great too. Spending time working in a foreign land could bring experiences nothing else can give. The only reason why I was biased against that choice was because of the lack of slack time during weekdays and reduced chance of making long-term friends there. It won’t be impossible but I mean, how much can you interact with the foreigners when you have a job to perform? 30 minutes? Will the same person come to your booth again the day after?

Anyway, I have not even applied for an exchange program as yet; the applications will open next term. I do hope this will come true and with Stelly, we can uncover lands far away from where we stay, attain experiences that we’ll never have in Singapore and discover ourselves.
